Described on the Canmore site as "one of the great landmarks of Western architectural history," because of Baird's adaption of Joseph Paxton's new prefabrication technology at the Crystal Palace to ordinary commercial use, and praised for its "delicate, cast-iron, arcaded and almost transparent facades," and "beautifully integrated timber lettering," this building earns praise too in Roger Dixon and Stefan Muthesius's Victorian Architecture as "one of a small number of remarkable exposed iron façades ... built between about 1850 and 1880." They say that it is known as the "Iron Building" (135).
