Cloth casing, with a gilt device.

John Leech.

1859

Elaborate gilt device and motto imprinted on smooth-textured green cloth.

7½ x 5½ inches

Another of Leech’s gilt devices, inviting us to progress through the portal which opens when the front board is lifted and the journey can begin. The front free endpaper takes the form of an elaborate, hand-coloured panorama, a scene of contemporary Ireland to meet and entice the reader/viewer’s eye, as if it were the first scene that we might see from our vantage on the dog-cart.
