The Baron’s menacing encounter with Sarah Newman

George du Maurier

20 December 1862

Wood engraving by Joseph Swain.

6 x 4 inches

This is the fourth illustration for Charles Warren Adams’sThe Notting Hill Mystery in Once a Week 7 (20 December 1862): 701.

The Baron’s malign influence is conveyed in his holding of the servant’s arm, while gazing intently at her. On this occasion the artist deploys a prosaic realism to suggest the otherwise unflappable world of servants.
