Marion —

Harry Furniss

13.3 x 9.3 cm framed

Dickens's Christmas Books, Charles Dickens Library Edition, facing p. 320.

Furniss's editor, J. A. Hammerton, has included no text beneath the portrait of Marion Jeddler, the elder sister who disappears for six years in order to permit her younger sister, Grace, to develop a relationship with her former fiance, Alfred Heathfield. The return of Marion, who has been living obscurely with her Aunt Martha, constitutes the climax of the story, but the disclosure would make too long a passage to be quoted under the picture.
