"The Characters in the Story": Harry Furniss provides a visual summary of the extensive cast, ranging the convict in the graveyard (upper left) through Miss Havisham in state (upper right), a graphic overture to the twenty-six illustrations that follow the frontispiece and the title-page. Several of these thumbnails do not appear anywhere in the program of illustration — for example, the judge, lower right, pronouncing sentence (probably over Magwitch in ch. 56) — suggesting that some of these may be based on preliminary studies that Furniss later elected not to use.
