The Descent of the Holy Spirit. Artist: Julius Schnorr von Carolsfeld. Engraver: A. Gaber, inscribed lower right. Source: Die Bibel in Bildern, Plate 226. Click on image to enlarge it.

And suddenly there came a sound from heaven as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled all the house where they were sitting. And there appeared unto them cloven tongues like as of fire, and it sat upon each of them. And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance. [Acts 2: 2-4; King James Bible]

Note the importance of the anachronistic codexes (or bound books) that Schnorr von Carolsfeld includes: the Holy Spirit descends when the Apostles and Christ’s followers are in the act of reading.
