‘“Let me try them,” said Lucy,’ 1865. Hand-coloured wood engraving drawn by john Leech and engraved by Joseph Swain. 4¼ x 6¼ inches. Facing 70 in Surtees’ Mr Facey Romford’s Hounds. This is a typical example of Leech’s representation of fox-hunting in which he stresses the disorder of the event as riders struggle against muddy conditions, malevolent brambles and, most tellingly, the characters’ own stupidity and incompetence. Always dynamic, his illustrations combine social satire with journalistic reportage.
