Christmas at Noningsby – Morning

John Everett Millais

Wood engraving by the Dalziels

6¼ x 4¼ inches

Anthony Trollope,Orley Farm, Vol 1, facing p. 169.

An illustration showing Felix Graham and Miss Staveley going into church; the scene does not appear in the text, as such, and Millais furnishes details of his own such as the Gothic arch and the rear view of the child. The characters’ shyness is conveyed in the downward glances. Special emphasis is given to the billowing crinoline, which is treated as a monumental design-element and reminds us, along with the gentlemen’s jackets and top hats, of the novel’s modernity.
