Owl

Harrison Weir

1858

Wood engraving by the Dalziel Brothers.

4 x 4 inches

Illustration for Summer Time in the Country, p.93.

An evocative representation of an owl in flight as it swoops out of the trees. Weir’s drawing of animals invariably includes a sensitive understanding of their habits and behaviours. This is a good example, clearly based on real-life observation.
