General view of the Western Cemetery at Highgate, in the early 1840s. Stephen Geary (1797-1854), James Bunstone Bunning (1802-1863), and David Ramsay (nurseryman). Partly consecrated on 20 May 1839, by the Bishop of London. James Stevens Curl writes: "It is certainly one of the most remarkable creations of the Victorian Age, and one of the most unashamedly Romantic: the spooky Egyptianising architecture is unforgettably wonderful, and the catacomb complex, with its climax in the Upper Terrace, is unquestionably a brilliant piece of scenographic design" (92).
