Christ Healing the Blind

Romsey Abbey, Hampshire

Franz Borgias Mayer (1848-1926) was the son of Joseph Gabriel Mayer (1808-1883), who founded the “Institute for Christian Art" in 1847 to "revitalize the medieval building trades" ("History"). The first overseas branch opened in London in 1865; others followed, including one in New York in 1888. In 1892, its worldwide operations earned it the accolade of being named a "Pontifical Institute of Christian Art" by Pope Leo XIII. This window shows shows Christ healing the blind man. Notice how little light this window allows through.

The window is in memory of Caroline Noel (1817-1877), daughter of The Hon and Rev Gerard Noel, Vicar of Romsey 1840-51. She was a hymnwriter who wrote among others "At the name of Jesus every knee shall bow." [Click on image to enlarge it.]
