Pizarro: Francisco Pizarro, who conquered the Incan Empire and founded the city of Lima, was born in Spain in 1471. In 1502 he took a fleet of ships to the Americas and continued on several expeditions to the New Worlds, including his conquest of Peru in 1532. On June 26, 1541, Pizarro was assassinated by 20 armed med led by Diego Almagro II.

In "Signs of the Times" Carlyle cites Pizarro, whom he praises for "energy and spiritual talent" — though not for the higher qualities of "virtue and heroism" — as an example of a someone who had some fine qualitiesdespite living in a time and place of poor government, such as Spain under the Inquisition and Philip II.
