Note 33 to Chapter 2 of the author's George Eliot and the Visual Arts, which Yale University Press published in a 1979. It has been included in the Victorian web with the kind permission of the author, who of course retains copyright.

Cross, II, 267, 275. In a diary at the Beinecke Library, Eliot notes that she has "copied out the lives of some saints from Mrs. Jamieson [sic] " on 31 August 1861. She had met Mrs. Jameson at the home of Barbara Leigh Smith in 1852 (Haight, p. 106).
