George Eliot's visits to Royal Academy and Old Water-Colour Society Exhibitions

Note 5 to Chapter 2 of the author's George Eliot and the Visual Arts, which Yale University Press published in a 1979. It has been included in the Victorian web with the kind permission of the author, who of course retains copyright.

Her Letters contain clear evidence that George Eliot visited the Royal Academy Exhibition in 1852 (II, 29-30), 1854 (II, 154-55), 1859 (III, 388), 1862 (IV, 37), 1872 (V, 277), and 1877 (VI, 365); and the Old Water-Colour Society Exhibition in 1862 (IV, 30) and 1864 (IV, 147). Moreover, her journals mention visits to the Royal Academy in 1867 (Cross, III, 14) and to the Old Water-Colour in 1869 (Cross, III, 82).
