George Eliot read (Cross, 11, 21) a warmer appreciation of Kaulbach's symbolism by Anna Mary Howitt, An Art-Student in Munich (London: Longman, Brown, Green, and Longmans, 1853), I, 20-35. In 1867, G. H. Lewes contributed an introduction to an English edition of Female Characters of Goethe, from the Original Drawings of William Kaulbach, first published in Germany in 1859.
