Die deutsche allgemeine und historische Kunst-Ausstellung opened in July (see Morgenblatt fur gebildete Leser, 8 August 1858, p. 760). George Eliot had left Munich in May. She knew Schadow from her visit to Berlin in 1854 (Cross, l, 285).
