Note 59 to Chapter 8 of the author's George Eliot and the Visual Arts, which Yale University Press published in a 1979. It has been included in the Victorian web with the kind permission of the author, who of course retains copyright.
Sterne, parodying the jargon of art critics, speaks of "the corregiescity of Correggio" in Tristram Shandy (Bk. 111, chap. 12). Hazlitt quotes the phrase in his essay on "English Students at Rome"; see The Complete Works of William Hazlitt, ed. P. P. Howe (London: J. M. Dent and Sons, 1933), XVII, 139.
