Beerbohm drew upon two photographs that Thomas Woolner, the sculptor who was an original member of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood, published in his memoirs. The first, a medallion, of poet in profile provided Tennyson's face and the second, a photograph of the sculptor working on a bust of the Poet Laureate, provided visual information for the rest of the caricature.
