“The Robert was after his grandfather the engineer; the Lewis was from his maternal grand- father, the minister of Colinton, on the northern slope of the Pentlands; the Balfour from the mother's family name. She was descended from the Balfours of Pilrig, a distinguished family, with wide connections, which brought R. L. S. into line, so to speak, with some considerable figures in Scots history” (Cruse 7).
