Original Ending to "The Charge of the Light Brigade"

James R. Kincaid, Aerol Arnold Professor of English, University of Southern California

Note 5 to the Appendix of the author's Tennyson's Major Poems, which Yale University Press published in 1975. It has been included in the Victorian Web with the kind permission of the author, who of course retains copyright.

The original ending was:
When can their glory fade?
O the wild charge they made!
  All the world wondered.
Honour the charge they made!
Honour the Light Brigade,
Noble six hundred!

It was replaced in 1855 by:

Honour the brave and bold!
Long shall the tale be told,
Yea, when our babes are old -
   How they rode onward.
