James R. Kincaid, Aerol Arnold Professor of English, University of Southern California

Note 3 to Chapter 2 of the author's Tennyson's Major Poems, which Yale University Press published in 1975. It has been included in the Victorian Web with the kind permission of the author, who of course retains copyright.

I recognize that "major" is a rather too convenient term in this assertion, but the poems I include under that heading seem to me to represent conventional choices; they are, in any case, generally the poems that are fixed by the tradition of anthologists as most popular, representative, and interesting.
