Note 14 to Chapter 3 of the author's Tennyson's Major Poems, which Yale University Press published in 1975. It has been included in the Victorian Web with the kind permission of the author, who of course retains copyright.
Langbaum, pp 90 - 91, is most notable. Though he also adopts this response to the poem's tone, R. F. Storch's "The Fugitive from the Ancestral Hearth," is far more subtle in treating the complexity of the Poem. His essay discusses in a rich and interesting way many of the same conflicts in the poem noted here, tracing both their cultural and literary associations. Also see William E. Fredeman, pp. 380 - 82.
