Denial of Continous Memory in Break, Break, Break

James R. Kincaid, Aerol Arnold Professor of English, University of Southern California

Note 2 to Chapter 3 of the author's Tennyson's Major Poems, which Yale University Press published in 1975. It has been included in the Victorian Web with the kind permission of the author, who of course retains copyright.

This argument was advanced as early as 1872 by R. H. Hutton, pp. 147 - 48. It is developed further by Phyllis Rackin, pp. 225-26, and by James Kissane, p. 93. These fine analyses are echoed in several places in my own reading.
