Note 23 to Chapter 3 of the author's Tennyson's Major Poems, which Yale University Press published in 1975. It has been included in the Victorian Web with the kind permission of the author, who of course retains copyright.
A very skillful attempt is made by Andy P. Antippas to show that the images are so excessive as to subvert and ironize themselves. This is surely the best case that can be made for such a reading; even so, it seems unconvincing to me.
