Note 1 to Chapter 7 of the author's Tennyson's Major Poems, which Yale University Press published in 1975. It has been included in the Victorian Web with the kind permission of the author, who of course retains copyright.
A brilliant and very detailed reading of this poem is given in Robert M. Estrich and Hans Sperber. The authors show how Tennyson modified his sources and manipulated the language of the poem to create a precise and controlled image of heroism - a peculiarly Victorian heroism, they maintain, which is untouched by irony.
