Note 4 to the Introduction of the author's Tennyson's Major Poems, which Yale University Press published in 1975. It has been included in the Victorian Web with the kind permission of the author, who of course retains copyright.
Most notable are Arthur J. Carr's fine essay and E. E. Smith's, The Two Voices, which is organized around various paralleled opposites in Tennyson's outlook and poems.
