And older man too: Trollope built a carapace which is firmly on in his defensive autobiography. I agree with N. John Hall's approach to Trollope's presentation of himself in social life as well as the earlier study by the Stebbins of his frequent melancholy, e.g., 105-6 and especially the concluding chapters, 307-333. Two students of Trollope's fiction which pick up on this are A. O. J. Cockshut, 169-97; and P. D. Edwards, 1-8.
