Note 18 to Chapter 1 of the author's Pegasus in Harness: Victorian Publishing and W. M. Thackeray, which University Press of Virginia published in 1992. It has been included in the Victorian Web with the kind permission of the author, who of course retains copyright.
The manuscript with imbedded fragments of proofs from the first typesetting is in the Pierpont Morgan Library. The discovery of the nature of those proof fragments was first revealed in the Thackeray Newsletter, nos. 6 and 7 (1977), and expanded in the Textual Introduction to my edition of Vanity Fair.
