Note 21 to Chapter 1 of the author's Pegasus in Harness: Victorian Publishing and W. M. Thackeray, which University Press of Virginia published in 1992. It has been included in the Victorian Web with the kind permission of the author, who of course retains copyright.
This seems particularly true in his days as editor of the Cornhill when, perhaps because his "brother authors" knew his ship had come in, they wrote asking for various kinds of help. One letter from Thackeray with a draft for £10 remains among George Smith's papers (NLS), for Smith intercepted and effectively canceled that bit of Thackeray's generosity.
