Note 11 to Chapter 2 of the author's Pegasus in Harness: Victorian Publishing and W. M. Thackeray, which University Press of Virginia published in 1992. It has been included in the Victorian Web with the kind permission of the author, who of course retains copyright.
Anne Monsarrat, quoting this letter, omitted the last paragraph and asserted throughout her account of Thackeray's relations with Fraser that Thackeray felt superior to and acted haughtily toward Fraser (Monsarrat, pp. 90-91). The only evidence she cited is the analogy of Warrington's behavior toward Bungay in Pendennis.
