Printing of Front Matter Last

Peter L. Shillingsburg, Professor of English, Mississippi State University

Note 27 to Chapter 2 of the author's Pegasus in Harness: Victorian Publishing and W. M. Thackeray, which University Press of Virginia published in 1992. It has been included in the Victorian Web with the kind permission of the author, who of course retains copyright.

It was customary, indeed necessary, to print front matter last, particularly if there was to be a table of content, with page references to the body of the work. Prefaces are usually the last part of a work to be written.
