Note 29 to Chapter 2 of the author's Pegasus in Harness: Victorian Publishing and W. M. Thackeray, which University Press of Virginia published in 1992. It has been included in the Victorian Web with the kind permission of the author, who of course retains copyright.
Gordon Ray, probably following Melville's bibliography, mistakenly called the 1845 reissue of The Irish Sketch-Book the first of Thackeray's books to go into a second edition (Ray, Adversity, p. 315), but that distinction belongs, if one discounts unauthorized foreign reprints, to Notes of a Journey from Cornhill to Crand Cairo, which reached a genuine, negotiated second edition in 1846, the year of its first publication.
