Note 34 to Chapter 2 of the author's Pegasus in Harness: Victorian Publishing and W. M. Thackeray, which University Press of Virginia published in 1992. It has been included in the Victorian Web with the kind permission of the author, who of course retains copyright.
Thackeray had reviewed Mystères in the Foreign Quarterly Review for April 1843 and noted various stints of translation in his diary for January 1844. On 2 Feb. 1844 Thackeray stipulated to the publisher M. Giraldon that he would do no move without payment (Letters 2: 159). His account books show that he received £4 in January and 100 francs in February from Giraldon (ibid., 2: 841); the translation was never finished.
