Note 11 to Chapter 3 of the author's Pegasus in Harness: Victorian Publishing and W. M. Thackeray, which University Press of Virginia published in 1992. It has been included in the Victorian Web with the kind permission of the author, who of course retains copyright.
One piece of evidence that does not fit this explanation is the fact that in November, Thackeray told the Baxters he was to get £750 from Harper for the book. and the next month he acknowledged that Harper paid $100 per month [Letters 4: 55, 60). At the then current exchange race of £1 to $5, it would have taken twenty-five months to make £500.
