Note 40 to Chapter 3 of the author's Pegasus in Harness: Victorian Publishing and W. M. Thackeray, which University Press of Virginia published in 1992. It has been included in the Victorian Web with the kind permission of the author, who of course retains copyright.
The underscoring was added in a different ink and may have been added by another hand. The letter itself is in Eyre Crowe's handwriting, obviously written from dictation. Thackeray may have added the underlining when proofing the letter, or Smith may have underscored the instructions that led to the extra charges for the three canceled sheets.
