Reasons for Publishing The Newcomes with Bradbury

Peter L. Shillingsburg, Professor of English, Mississippi State University

Note 43 to Chapter 3 of the author's Pegasus in Harness: Victorian Publishing and W. M. Thackeray, which University Press of Virginia published in 1992. It has been included in the Victorian Web with the kind permission of the author, who of course retains copyright.

Jenifer Glynn speculated that the reason The Newcomes went to Bradbury and Evans was that before the Cornhill Magazine, which began in 1860, Smith did not publish serials and "Thackeray wanted the money that only a serial could bring" (Glynn, p. 120). These things may have been true, but the reason for publishing with Bradbury and Evans instead of Smith seems to have been that an agreement had already been struck before Smith offered.
