Senators Butlee and Sumner

Peter L. Shillingsburg, Professor of English, Mississippi State University

Note 20 to Chapter 4 of the author's Pegasus in Harness: Victorian Publishing and W. M. Thackeray, which University Press of Virginia published in 1992. It has been included in the Victorian Web with the kind permission of the author, who of course retains copyright.

The Butlee-Sumner cooperation may seem unlikely given the hostilities between these men three years later over the slavery question, when Butler's nephew, Preston Brooks, caned and nearly killed Sumner on the Senate floor.
