A Translation of Esmond by Wailly?

Peter L. Shillingsburg, Professor of English, Mississippi State University

Note 32 to Chapter 4 of the author's Pegasus in Harness: Victorian Publishing and W. M. Thackeray, which University Press of Virginia published in 1992. It has been included in the Victorian Web with the kind permission of the author, who of course retains copyright.

Ray noted that "though Wailly later translated Thackeray's Barry Lyndon, he did not try his hand at Esmond," but the British Library catalogue lists a copy of Esmond "trans. into French by León de Wailly" and dated 1856.
