Impact of the Crimea War on Literary Trade

Note 33 to Chapter 4 of the author's Pegasus in Harness: Victorian Publishing and W. M. Thackeray, which University Press of Virginia published in 1992. It has been included in the Victorian Web with the kind permission of the author, who of course retains copyright.

The letter is undated but may be from 1854 during the war in the Crimea about which Thackeray wrote to another correspondent, "The trade will be dead in another year in England I fear, if this war continues of wh. the dreadful interest so far surpasses all our fictions" (Letters 3:410).
