Thackeray Returning Money to His Publishers

Note 7 to Chapter 4 of the author's Pegasus in Harness: Victorian Publishing and W. M. Thackeray, which University Press of Virginia published in 1992. It has been included in the Victorian Web with the kind permission of the author, who of course retains copyright.

Thackeray did return some money to Bradbury and Evans on The Virginians by taking a reduction in initial monthly payments, but at the time he considered himself overpaid and did it from a sense of concern for the publisher, not because of a contractual obligation (see chapter 3 above).
