Note 17 to Chapter 5 of the author's Pegasus in Harness: Victorian Publishing and W. M. Thackeray, which University Press of Virginia published in 1992. It has been included in the Victorian Web with the kind permission of the author, who of course retains copyright.
Mr. Pitt (p. 453, l. 31), which was not changed to Sir Pitt until the second edition (London, 1853), seems to be favorite point, perhaps because its presence in every copy of the first edition makes every owner happy. Other "points", such as the use of roman type for the heading on page l and the absence of the Steyne illustration on page 336 first occurred in the third printing of the numbers containing them.
