Publishers Postponing Works to the Next Year

Note 28 to Chapter 5 of the author's Pegasus in Harness: Victorian Publishing and W. M. Thackeray, which University Press of Virginia published in 1992. It has been included in the Victorian Web with the kind permission of the author, who of course retains copyright.

It appears to have been usual practice with publishers then, as now, to postdate works published late in the year; so the Simon Fraser University copy probably belongs to the November 1865 printing. I have not actually seen that book, which is noncirculating.
