In his well-known essay, "The Structure of Wuthering Heights," reprinted in Wuthering Heights, ed. William M. Sale, Jr. (New York: W. W. Norton, 1972), pp. 286-98, Charles Percy Sanger notes the same freedom in Emily Brontë's use of old and new inheritance law. Wuthering Heights was written in 1846.
