These letters graciously have been shared with the Victorian Web by Eunice and Ron Shanahan; they have been taken from their website. The letters give an insight into the daily lives and concerns of 'ordinary' people without whom history would not exist. The letters are a wonderful example of how much history may be gleaned from such sources.

This letter is enclosed in the smallest envelope in my collection,a very small 12cm x 7cm (4-3/4" by 2-1/2") |
The letter has seven postmarks on the back of the envelope which plot the route from Talyllyn to Rome. It took a total of 9 days to go from a small village in Wales to Rome, which is surprising, as it started on Easter Sunday. |
|
The letter was ‘crossed’ and to read it, you have to turn the letter 90° to the right. |
