Jill Armitage has a BA in Social Psychology from the University of Sussex and a PhD from the University of Kent. After spending most of her career working in the criminal justice system, she undertook a number of part-time courses on History of Art. Since then, she has spent many years researching her relative, the artist Edward Armitage, RA (1817-1896).

In 2017 Jill published the first comprehensive account of Armitage’s life and work, Edward Armitage RA: Battles in the Victorian Art World, to coincide with the bicentenary of Armitage’s birth.
