ichael Gold is Emeritus Professor of Comparative Employment Relations at Royal Holloway University of London (RHUL). He graduated in Philosophy, Politics and Economics from the University of Oxford and was awarded his PhD in Sociology by the University of Edinburgh. Starting out as a journalist, he later became a Lecturer at the University of Westminster and Senior Research Officer at the National Institute of Economic and Social Research before joining RHUL in 1996. Michael’s research interests include industrial relations theory and history, and European employment relations. He is co-author with Chris Smith of Where’s the ‘Human’ in Human Resource Management? Managing Work in the 21st Century (Bristol University Press, 2023).

However, he also has a long-standing fascination with nineteenth-century English literature, and on his recent retirement took an MA in Victorian Studies at Birkbeck College, London. He is particularly interested in how ideas and assumptions about what we now call the social sciences – notably economics, employment relations, psychology and sociology – were reflected and developed in novels and poetry throughout the course of the Victorian period.

Michael is a Fellow of the British Universities’ Industrial Relations Association, and a member of the Chartered Institute of Linguists and the Elizabeth Gaskell Society.
