I earned my Ph.D. at the University of South Carolina in 2003 and am currently working there as a Visiting Assistant Professor. My dissertation, "Wedded Women, Wicked Women: Marriage, Morality, and Maternity in the Work of Margaret Oliphant," explores how Oliphant uses socially charged roles for women such as wife and mother to widen the boundaries of the private sphere. My current research explores depictions of single women, especially spinsters and widows, in a variety of different arenas.
My interest in Margaret Oliphant stems from a general love of both Victorian and Scottish literature. Having made several trips to Britain, including study abroad as an undergraduate and graduate student, I enjoy the interplay of land and literature. I find that these experiences inform and enrich my readings of texts by giving me a firmer sense of the way people lived and memorialized their experiences.
