Richard A. Schindler, who is Associate Professor of Art History at Allegheny College, received his B.A. from Gettysburg College, an M. A. from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, and a Ph. D. from Brown University. His scholarly interests chiefly concern illustration, British nineteenth-century painting, and the cultural ramifications of anarchism. He writes reviews and articles for the New Art Examiner, and in addition to his art-historical and broader cultural scholarship, Schindler is a professional illustrator. His work, which has frequently seen publication in New Pathways into Science Fiction and Fantasy, Instead of a Magazine, and other peridicals, also appears in hardcover books, including Gene Wolfe's science-fiction novel, Free Live Free (1984).
