The Chase by Richard Ansdell, RA (1815–1885). 1847. Oil on canvas. 166.5 x 290.5 cm. Manchester Art Gallery. Accession no. 1882.6. Transferred from the Royal Manchester Institution, 1882.

This is one of Ansdell's more dramatic scenes, in which he acknowledges the suffering and cruelty in nature, although the instrument here is man himself, the huntsman who has chased the magnificent stag and set fierce dogs upon it.
