“Mr. Herkomer’s portrait of Mr. Cuthbert Quilter is good but hardly ‘energised’ and strong enough. The Duke of Devonshire was, as the illustration shows, more fortunate at Mr. Herkomer’s hands, yet the likeness is not quite satisfactory” (260).
